<image:title>Our Practitioners - Rami Nijjar, Registered Psychologist & Clinic Director - I am a people-person and love developing collaborative, therapeutic relationships with my clients. I have been interested in human development, relationships, and resilience for as far back as I can remember. In fact, my clinical training started in my teen years as a volunteer on the teen crisis line and then continued as I volunteered for women shelters and not-for-profits focused on adolescent health. I chose clinical psychology as a field of study because it allowed me to develop an integrated understanding of our psychology, biology, and social functioning.</image:title>
<image:caption>As a Doctoral student at Concordia University, I learned about the neurobiology of stress and attachment, the vast ways in which stress impacts our lives and relationships, and the numerous pathways to risk and resilience. I explored many of these topics following a group of parents with bipolar disorder and their children as the children matured through adolescence and into young adulthood. Here I was able to witness how early experiences can shape the ways in which we move through life later on. Also, I learned the value of well timed, focused therapy in helping people to overcome such challenges. I completed my clinical training at the Montreal General Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital, and McGill Mental Health Service. At these sites, I gained experience addressing a range of issues including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, chronic pain, eating disorders, addiction, school-related stress, working with life transitions, couples therapy, and sex therapy. Upon finishing my schooling, I moved to Vancouver, where I set up my private practice. Alongside my practice, I worked with sex researcher Lori Brotto to help run mindfulness groups for women with low sexual desire. I have also run mindfulness and cognitive-behaviorual therapy groups for women with vulvar pain that interferes with intercourse and men recovering from prostate cancer treatment. Following my joy of teaching, I provide clinical supervision to doctoral students at Adler University and the McGill University Health Centre and am a clinical tutor within the UBC Sexual Medicine Department. I am thrilled to have hand-picked a team of kind and brilliant therapists to work alongside me at Resilience Psychotherapy. Approach My clients have described me as warm, intelligent, and easy to talk to. As a therapist, my approach is person-centered, collaborative, and eclectic. What this means is that I seek to understand my clients well and am trained in the use of a broad range of techniques. I work closely with you to help you identify factors in your environment (including your environment during formative years) and within yourself (i.e. behaviour or thought patterns) that may be creating stress in your life and relationships. Using expansive listening and authentic curiosity, I choose the approach that may best fit your needs, life phase, and personality. At the base, I work to create a safe, non-judgmental space in which you can explore the roots of your struggles and move towards more positive solutions. Ultimately, my goal is to help you to discover your own inherent resilience. My approach includes principles of many evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, emotion-focused therapy, compassion focused therapy, mindfulness, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. My favourite thing about my job is getting to witness people uncover their own inherent resilience and realize that they are so much more than the stories they tell themselves. <image:title>Our Practitioners - Karolina Taracha; Trauma, Couples and Relationship Therapist - My name is Karolina Taracha and I am a Master Practitoner in Clinical Counselling (MPCC) with the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association. I work both with individuals and couples who want to enjoy a more purposeful and fulfilling life through the improvement of their relationships, be it with their partner, family, friends or coworkers. Relationships contribute immensely to our mental health. We are wired for connection. Yet, as anyone knows, they can be extremely stressful and put us out of balance, especially when strong emotions overcome us. It is not uncommon to feel sad, disappointed, frustrated or misunderstood when someone we care about just doesn’t seem to get us. If you are currently struggling in your relationship, you keep having the same arguments and it feels like you are stuck in a cycle getting nowhere, conversing about it with a trained professional might just be the next step for you. If you are desiring a change but cannot seem to make it happen, I can help you understand yourself more, find your voice and communicate more freely and effectively so that you can solve disagreements in healthy ways and make your relationships stronger and more fulfilling. In my work I combine Emotional-Focused Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Narrative and Somatic (body-focused) modalities. I use a client-centred, trauma-informed perspective. I am inspired by positive psychology and truly believe that although we cannot control our past, we decide how we show up on our journey today. In my private life I am an avid hiker, a traveler and a nature enthusiast. I love discovering new places and experiencing different cultures. Prior to Canada I lived in Poland, England, Italy and Australia. Before becoming a counsellor I worked professionally in the HR field, always supporting individuals. I am an observant listener, an empathetic communicator and a seer of opportunities. Happiness for me is about making conscious choices resulting from self-discovery and inner healing. My credentials: RPC (Registered Professional Counsellor) with the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association (CPCA), Registration ID: 4168 MA, Human Resource Management, London Metropolitan University</image:title>

<image:title>Our Practitioners - Hus Mawani, Therapist - I believe that the growth and healing happen in relationship with others, not alone. I am passionate about working together to create a space of collaboration and trust where my clients can heal, discover their resilience, and reclaim their power. I started my therapy career as a call-taker, clinical trainer, and mentor for volunteer call-takers during my years as a staff member on the Fraser Health Crisis Line. I had the privilege of directly supporting our diverse callers with a range of issues including depression, social anxiety, PTSD, grief and loss, low self-esteem, chronic pain, and suicidal ideation. I hold a Crisis Worker Certification from the American Association of Suicidology (2017). Some of my areas of specialization include working with anxiety, depression, sex and sexuality, intimacy issues and interpersonal stress. Approach As a therapist, I work from a compassionate, collaborative, and relational approach. We are in this together. My approach is nonjudgmental and gentle. My empathic listening and crisis intervention skills are a stable base for my counselling work, letting us focus fully on the moment with the knowledge that our space is safe, secure, and trauma-informed. I draw from a variety of different approaches to best fit you, including internal family systems therapy, somatic (body-based) therapies, person-centred therapy, compassion focused therapy, and depth therapies (Adlerian brief therapy, Jungian/archetypal, psychodynamic brief therapy).</image:title>

<image:title>Karolina Taracha - Karolina Taracha; Trauma, Couples and Relationship Therapist</image:title>
<image:caption>My name is Karolina Taracha and I am a Master Practitioner in Clinical Counselling with the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association. My credentials: RPC (Registered Professional Counsellor) with the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association (CPCA), Registration ID: 4168 MA, Human Resource Management, London Metropolitan University</image:caption>

<image:title>Sex and Intimacy Therapy - Strategies for intimacy issues</image:title>
<image:caption>Here at Resilience Psychotherapy, we want to help you find your way to the type of intimacy that gives you a sense of pleasure, joy, and authenticity. Everyone is unique in what helps them relax, get into the mood, and ask for what they want and need in the bedroom. A little communication goes a long way, especially when you are guided by a therapist that normalizes the conversation and makes it easy and fun.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sex and Intimacy Therapy - Try Group Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>As part of your services, we also offer the Optimal Sexual Experience group for couples. This group therapy program was developed by Dr. Peggy Kleinplatz, clinical psychologist, sex therapist, and author of the book “Magnificent Sex.” In this group, couples have a chance to explore and overcome different barriers to their sex lives in a fun, supportive group setting. Although the idea of the type of group therapy may sound intimidating, we find that couples end up really appreciating knowing that they are not alone in their intimacy issues and struggles, and they learn a great deal from each other.</image:caption>

<image:title>Internal Family Systems - Move out of “Fight-Flight-Feeze-Fawn” and towards “Tend and Befriend” in how you relate to yourself</image:title>
<image:caption>According to this approach, we all carry inside of us a Self (a true self, an authentic self, or a higher self, etc.) that is often blocked by Protective parts ("protectors") and Exiled parts ("exiles"), who carry burdens from past hardships. In IFS therapy, we begin to "unblend" from the protective parts that often define how we operate in the world and begin to access Self. Once we anchor in Self, we bring the healing qualities of the Self (compassion, calm, curiosity, clarity, courage) and begin to "reparent" and retrieve our exiled parts, which frees up our protective parts to take on new, creative, and life-enhancing roles in our lives. IFS is based on the radical and freeing idea that there are "no bad parts."</image:caption>
