Our Story: A Foundation of Compassion and Expertise
Founded in 2019 by Dr. Rami Nijjar, Resilience Psychotherapy was born from a deep understanding of the human experience and a profound commitment to fostering growth, healing, and emotional resilience. After a decade of studying attachment, relationships, and mental health, and working with a diverse range of clients—including individuals facing challenges like sexual pain, low desire, prostate cancer, chronic pain, eating disorders, mood disorders, OCD, ADHD, and autism—Dr. Nijjar recognized a common thread running through these experiences: histories of trauma, stressful life events, and interpersonal difficulties. These factors, whether rooted in intergenerational patterns or oppression-based harm, shape how we perceive ourselves and interact with the world around us.
A Journey Rooted in Wisdom and Mindfulness
Dr. Nijjar’s path to founding Resilience Psychotherapy extends far beyond her academic achievements. From an early age, she was introduced to the transformative power of meditation within her Sikh family and community, which planted the seeds of mindfulness in her life. Over the years, she expanded her practice, studying various contemplative techniques, including Vipassana, Metta meditation, and yoga sciences.
This personal journey came full circle when Dr. Nijjar earned her PhD and began integrating mindfulness and self-compassion practices into her professional work. She trained with the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) and, alongside her trans colleagues, developed specialized programming for the trans community, which was first offered at the Stanford University Student Association in 2019. Since then, Dr. Nijjar has continued to tailor interventions for diverse populations, using mindfulness and self-compassion to create meaningful change and support healing.
Collaborative Impact in the Workplace
In 2022, Dr. Nijjar and her team worked closely with Concordia University faculty to enhance the wellbeing of its members, marking the beginning of a broader initiative aimed at reducing workplace stress and promoting innovation and resilience. This collaboration set the stage for Resilience Psychotherapy's growing partnerships with corporations, educators, and healthcare providers to address stress, foster wellbeing, and support sustainable growth within professional environments.
